Installing a boot loader

I have been using Red hat 7.3 for a couple of months now and so far I have used a boot floppy,so I have put the floppy in my drive to boot into Linux/GNU (otherwise Windows is booted).I also have Windows ME installed,and the Red Hat 7.3 installation offers the possibility to install LILO or GRUB as boot loader.So I was wondering,which one should I install and does a boot loader give you a menu were you can choose if you want to start Red hat or Windows ME?

You could use either LILO or GRUB to get that boot menu where you can choose which OS to use. Just a matter of preferences...
LILO has been around longer than GRUB, but newer Linux versions seems to prefer GRUB.

Now I need to ask a silly question;
can you you select default OS which is started if you do nothing for an X amount of seconds,with LILO or GRUB?
Because I am lazy and just want to turn my computer on and have it boot Red Hat And do you get a command line where you can edit the boot parameters (like with a boot floppy)?

Can't say about GRUB, but LILO choses the first option as the default OS to boot. I think that GRUB does the same though. And the 'command line' should be there.

Yeah grub can be configured to choose a OS after a set number of seconds. You can also change the boot picture which is the background of the choices! Keeps me happy

Options are in the grub.conf file which is erm somewhere under /etc/something I forget/grub

Yeah it can boot any OS.. All grub is is like some pointers to where the OS's MBR is..

example

In Grub

Linux Redhat -> Points to where the redhat boot record is
Windows XP -> Points to where the XP boot record is
FreeBSD -> Points to where the FreeBSD boot record is
Windows ME -> Points to where the ME boot record is

Selecting an option, doesn't handle the actual booting, it just tells the computer where to find the righ boot sector for the OS you chose.

Nope, SuSE 8.1 uses GrUB by default.
