You're right but the 1024 c. limit apply mostly to old versions of lilo and probably grub (never used it).

Well,I removed the Red Hat partitions, but now my partitions are ****ed up and I can only use Windows (arggg).I have RH 8 on cd,but I dont know when I will have fixed the partition problems so that I can install it (the easiest would be to remove all the existing partitions and let RH use all the space, but I am not allowed to do this ).

You don't seem have a lot of knowledge, i'd suggest to read a good book to get introduced to Linux. Again, check out the The Linux Documentation Project to know it once and for all. There is a Linux user-guide book avalaible on that site but if you know DOS i'd suggest the DOS to Linux HOWTO which is what I used to get here.

The RH installation should ask you whether you wan't to create a partition or use an existing one. And if you're that serious i'd suggest using Slackware to get your hands dirty so that you'll never have to worry again about stupid admin problems.

You could try VMware as well and screw your system without worry.

OK, stick RedHat 8 disk 1 in, go as far as selecting your language and keyboard, then ctrl-alt-f1 followed by alt-f2 should get you a root shell.

Send me the output from fdisk -l /dev/hda (assuming hda is the disk you've made a mess of), and I'll see if I can figure out whether and how you can get it working.

The problem that I have is that I deleted the RH 7.3 partitions with Partition magic, leaving me 14 gb of unallocated space. But when i try to distribute the unallocated space to my windows partiton (and this I have done before, and it always worked) I get this error:"error 45.CRC error in data".This errors comes up when partition magic has moved 97% of a hidden partiton (as you can see on this screenshot). What I want to do is distribute the unallocated space to my windows partition and then split into two (so that Windows and Linux/GNU have the same amount of disk space, namely ±20GB).

I will try that fdisk thing tonight,I havent burned the nr.1 cd yet.

btw riv, does the latest version of Slackware come with GNOME 2?

Ahh the joy of strugling with partitions... Try other programs too. And I doubt the latest of slack comes with gnome 2, actually it's still experimental so it won't be included yet.

Hmm,how many cd's (ISO's) does Slackware use?I may try it when I have fixed my partitions.I can always install GNOME 2 with GARNOME,thats no problem, just that Red Hat comes with everything configured to use anti aliased text and the Bluecurve skin.
I dont like it though that RH installs too much junk on my disk.

Well, I'm not surprised you can't boot Linux if the partition is nearly 30GB into the disk...

I've not used Partition Magic since about version 4 when I shrank an NT partition to make an NT/RedHat 6.2 dual-boot laptop. Hopefully someone a bit more familiar with it will be reading this and can help you out. Do the two pairs of triangles mark the 2GB DOS and 8GB BIOS limits?

If you can't move the hidden partition (what is a manufacturer's system partition doing in the middle of the disk to start with?), you could try this:

- Shrink your Windows partition by about 100MB and move it that much further into the disk.

- Create a new primary partition in the empty space at the beginning of the disk to use as /boot.

- Create an extended partition in the unused space at the end of the disk and then add logical partitions inside it to use for swap, / and any other partitions you want to keep seperate (/home, if you're thinking you might switch distros).

That should give you a reasonable split of the disk and allow both OSs to boot. As always, back up the entire world before you start, and I take no responsibilty for loss or damage (including of and to your sanity and/or will to live).

Slack can take up to 4 cds but only the first one is necescary to install. Check out the mirrors (the main site is overcrowded and slow) for the iso image.
