installing jvm on Linux
Just downloaded the jre131_02.xpi from the sun site... er what the hell do I do with it?? I have some Java experience, but the virtual machine was already installed... I'm sure it's really simple, so...?

Umm... that's the plugin for netscape/mozzila, no? I think you want a different file...
If i'm wrong (possible), try making the file executable and running it. Sun has a habit of offering self-extracting installers. |

yeah, good thinking - that must be what it is.. and that's not what I want. Back to the Sun site for another rummage. I'm getting confused between the SDK and JRE right now.. and downloading version 1.4 for linux, just yields a big binary '.bin' file... still don't know what to do with it !

Ya, the .bin is a self-extracting archive. Make it executeable and run it. It extracts (and runs, i think), their install script.

See http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/utils/ujava.html for instructions. The .bin asks you to agree to licence and then gives you rpm. See the article for more USEFUL infos.
