installing mod_ssl

I wanted to use ssl certs using mod_ssl module, so...
I upgraded Mandrake from 8.2 to 9.0.
Downloaded apache (1.3.27), mod_ssl (2.8.10) and latest openssl.
Installed and built Apache (followed latest O'Reilly book's instr).
I Did same for openssl and mod_ssl.

According to O'Reilly, apachectl should have been added or updated in /usr/src/bin but I see no bin dir. and consequently no new apacheclt script.

I ran slocate.cron and then ran locate apachectl and none of the apachectls found had been updated and none would not accept startssl as an option.

I have been wrestling with this for too long. Is there anything I am overlooking? I would be most appreciative for any help or direction. I thank you in advance.

If I remember the config file has an ssl section that will start it with ssl mode automatically. However, a word of caution, the mod_ssl with apache may not quite work as well as you envision. There are a bunch of Internet Explorer versions, especially a large portion of version 5 which will have a problem with the newer versions of mod_ssl. I ended up having to go to Apache-ssl to solve the problem. The older version worked great, so I got a big surprise when I went to a new server that had mod_ssl installed and started getting hundreds of complaints that people could not get the secure server to work with IE, though it worked just fine with netscape.
