Installing Wifi USB drivers on Xubuntu

Hello all. This is my first post, so apologies in advance if I breach etiquette.

I am trying to install the Ralink RT2870 drivers on my Xubuntu machine. I am completely new to Linux, so have been doing my best to follow guides from the internet, but have become stuck.

I am using Xubuntu 2.6.24-19-generic, according to uname -a.

I have downloaded and un-tarred the driver files, followed the configuration instructions in the README file, and run
Code:
make
and
Code:
make install
, and
Code:
insmod re2870sta.ko
.

At this stage, I'm not sure what to do. The README file suggests I run
Code:
ifconfig ra0 inet <desired_IP> up
, which yields the following errors:
Code:
SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied
ra0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
ra0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

Running this code preceded by sudo causes my computer to freeze (even before asking for the superuser password)

A guide here: http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Ralink_RT2870 suggests (under the "Usage" heading) that I should run
Code:
modprobe rt2870sta
, which gives no output. However, trying to then run
Code:
ln -s /etc/init.d/net.lo /etc/init.d/net.ra0
gives the error
Code:
ln: creating symbolic link `/etc/init.do/net.ra0': File exists
. Further, runing
Code:
/etc/init.d/net.ra0 restart
gives
Code:
bash: /etc/init.d/net.ra0: No such file or directory
.

I am at a loss for what to do. Any advice would be appreciated.

EDIT: I did my best to follow the instructions here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linux-install-rt2870-chipset-based-usb-wireless-adapter.htm l, but failed at step #5 - ra0 did not show up under ifconfig output, only eth0 and lo.
