internet, cable modem, usb
i've roadrunner, ericsson piperider (modem). in florida
i found a bunch of tutorials on how to set up internet connection, but all of them require ethernet card which i don't have. i got a usb port. how would i go about setting up connection with that. i'm a complete noob, i just installed linux 3 hours ago. which is redhat 7.3. but i can't live without internet. i know u'd say go buy an ethernet card, but i'd rather do it this way. i'll probably end up buying it anyway. but still, help me =) thank you |

You can try using Red Hat's built in dialer software, rp3, or KDE's - kppp. I hate them both, as I've never successfully set up a connection with either.
I now point you to wvdial ('man wvdial' and 'man wvdial.conf'). Read that and try to work on it. Incidentally, your USB device that you'll need to specify on the 'Modem = dev' line of your wvdial.conf file is in /dev/usb (I'd guess it's /dev/usb/ttyUSB0, but I could certainly be wrong). When you go through setting it all up, do it as root at first, and I'll try to help you get all the file permissions and whatnot worked out so that you can connect as a non-root user once it's all set up. One final point, as you're working on this, keep an eye on /var/log/messages (root access only) as that's where wvdial spits the details of it's failures to by default. |

Search for your modem in google.com/linux and you should know in less than 1 minute if it will work or not.
Always check your kernel first for hardware support (recompile!!).

i just found out how little i knew about linux =)
i don't even know how to read the files from the floppy. i thought if i set up internet then i could learn the rest through it. since i've only one computer. and can't have multiple hard drives. is there like a beginner tutorial. for dummies or something like that. how to get the basics working. also it was weird when i went to the dial up connection setup. it asked me which country i'll be connecting from. and u.s wasn't there. the wizard only had like 6 countries. lol i guess i'm that stupid. thanks for your help though =) |

Absolutely! All you have to do is get the source, completely (and I mean completely) recode it, then recompile it Sorry mate... I screened out the part of your post about the modem being CABLE.... eesh... no more kicks to the head for me, thanks. |

Why can't you have multiple hard drives? Heck, if you're not concerned about flat out performance, you can get 2 20GB 5400 RPM disks from TCWO.com for about 130.00 USD with shipping. You can get 1 40GB disk for about 80 w/ shipping if you don't mind messing with the partition issues (I'd reccomend this method)....
BTW..... you don't seem like a hardware guy, so here's a tip: if you upgrade the RAM, don't buy the junk they sell at Wal Mart or whatever. Go out to GoogleGear.com and get some quality stuff. Here's the jist: figure out what BUS speed your motherboard has and get RAM that matches it (e.g. 133Mhz, 100Mhz, etc.), the lower the "latency" number the better (mine's 2 which is "average", 3 is "slow", and 1 is "out of my price range"), and get the max amount that your CPU's chipset can handle.... otherwise.. it's really not much of an upgrade ![]() Oh... as far as Windows.... well.. $100.00 and you can get the Win98 OEM with a pretty box and all.. and since that's the best version of Windoze.... there you go! i bought ram 256 from newegg that didn't work so i bought 128 from tcwo works fine. then i bought an ethernet card (lynksis or something like that, version 4) from tcwo, pretty fast delivery, since i live 40 minutes from there (could've been faster)), the green light's blinking but i can't connect. not even on windows =), but on windows it's cause i messed up the adapter or something. it installs but then does DNS check and tells me it can't resolve sites "yahoo.com" "whitehouse.org". argh. i didn't really figure how to make it work on linux, rh7.
there it checks for new hardware, pops up a screen asking if i want to configure it. so i set it start on boot. and i think that's it. but the rest of the things are messed up still in my head i'll get it eventually if ever connect to internet on windows. tho the floppy with drivers for ethernet has linux folder in it. |

You should choose your hardware more carefully. I know Linksys is supported and often works but it has the reputation of being as cheesy as 1kg of cheese for 3 bucks. Or Kraft Dinner (less than 2$ for 4 portions, think of it). D-Links are cheap and mostly reliable.
Don't use the drivers on the floppy, they're just there to prove they support it or perhaps for some very old kernel. The one on your current kernel are much more up to date and already implemented, all you gotta do is activate it. ![]() |

i had to format my hdd for the stupid ethernet card to work. i think it was something simple i just couldn't fix it =). since everything worked it just didn't resolve the sites, as if something needed to be changed. oh well. i wish i knew how to back things up tho. since this is 3rd time i lost everything besides the really important stuff i saved on floppies.
hopefully i'll get it to work on linux also. that way i can get rid of stupid windows forever. lol too good to be true. no need to get it working with usb now. thanks for the help tho =) |
