is there a way to rescue files from the failure of update 6.0 to 7.2 r

is there a way to rescue files from the failure of update 6.0 to 7.2 r ??

or to bring up the system to boot up and work as normal linux box???????

is the mountpoint = one of the original directory name???????
or / or /root ???????

I usually check

fsck /dev/hda5 --> hda12.

wait a minute:

mount -t ext2 /dev/hda5 /mnt/root

cd /mnt/root/etc
vi /mnt/root/etc/lilo.conf
mcopy lilo.conf. I have:

boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=10
###### rem out for 64 M append="mem=127M"
#append="mem=95m"
# do not this stmt here , won't work 29th April 2001
#15 sept 2001 added 127 MB rams /sbin/lilo
#append="mem=127M"
default=linux
message=/boot/message
linear

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7-10
label=linux-up
read-only
root=/dev/hda5

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7-10enterprise
label=linux
read-only
root=/dev/hda5

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7-10smp
label=linux-smp
read-only
root=/dev/hda5

other=/dev/hda1
label=DOS
table=/dev/hda
append="mem=95M"

question:
1. have the past upgrading has installed the latest kernal from rh 7.2 into my old rh 6.0 box??
2. what should I do next?
while I tried to delete and left only
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=10

and then saved
/mnt/root/sbin/lilo said no such file or directory.

I really got no idea now!!!!
