Lilo - Missing Operating System

So I bought a cheap old (brand new) copy of Linux to learn it. Mandrake 6.1 --install it-- and cant get it to boot up WITHOUT the boot disk.

I keep getting 'Missing Operating System' .. I have nothing else on the hard drive and I installed LILO on the 'Master Boot Record' ..still a no go--- can someone help, because I dont trust floppies and do not want to have this system dependant upon a floppy.
