The output of these commands should tell you a lot of information.
sudo lspci
sudo lshw
sudo lsusb

Also, what version of Ubuntu are you loading?

It might be worth looking at http://xubuntu.org/ for a low-spec machine.

Thanks for your help, I decided to do a complete format using diskpart.

Formatted and burnt the ubuntu ISO to dvd, booted and installed. This way i have this system running ubuntu and ubuntu only.

The issue i have now is, the setup completes but then i cannot boot ubuntu because it is not creating a boot record or MBR?

im stuck at

"Reboot and select propper boot device
or insert boot media in selected boot device"

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is this what the BIOS prints after reboot?

Because something similar is also printed right at the end of the installation, along with something like "remove DVD, close the tray and reboot".

If it's not working from the hard disk, you can always reboot using the installation CD/DVD and use your partition tool to verify that the hard disk is formatted with two partitions (one called / and the other called swap)
