Linux Suggestions Needed

I am building a server that is going to handle web hosting as well as many other things. I am wondering what distro I should use. Should I use the FTP version of SuSE 8.0, or the ISO images of Redhat 7.3? I heard that SuSe FTP is pro without the commercial packages, and I'm just wondering what I should use.

Redhat is probably the most used for webservers. It has the most control panels made for it. Do you really want to use linux though? I would suggest FreeBSD for a server if you were up for a change. It runs fast, stable, and secure.

in all honesty, I was going to run OpenBSD (or freebsd), but after I tried and failed, I decided to go linux. The BSD's are awesome, and they scream, but they are a b!tch to install. Maybe with some pointers I can do it though.

linuxes? linices? lice?

I started out with redhat (7.0) which I got from the cover of SAMS red hat linux unleashed - I went thru 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3. At some point in this journey I got bored and so I also obtained FreeBSD 4.5 and Mandrake 8.2.

While I got FreeBSD on okay, it did take a bit of work... so if you want an easy life, I'd bypass it.

Mandrake was straightforward to get on, but it all seemed a bit too colourful for my taste.

So, my advice is to go RH. This is simply because there are tons of resources out there, especially if you prefer to read from the printed page rather than a screen (I am still using the aforementioned SAMS book).

I've currently got a headless RH7.3 development box running mysql, php, apache, ssh, samba and sendmail on a feeble duron 633mhz chip with 64MB of memory and it's been a dream to work with.
