Linux System Requirements
Hi, for ages I've been interested in installing Linux and I actually did it ages ago (OpenLinux 2.2) but it was pretty slow... That was on a 233MMX 32mb RAM, 3.5GB EIDE HD.
Anyway, I've now got a 700Duron, 192MB, 20GB and I'm thinking of installing. Anyway, its a Compaq Presario so its got a cheap soundcard and modem (though I've already got a 3Com US Robotics 56k External which is good). I'm way running out of space on my HD so I'll definitely have to get a new one to accomodate Linux. If I got a 60GB and say, gave Linux 30GB and perhaps another sound card how would the system run? I don't want a scenario where the Linux setup is slower than my.... (please God, don't strike me down) Windows... ME (oh, the shame!). I know its down to personal preference but what would you advise I take - distro I mean? Mandrake, Redhat, SuSE? Well, thanks in advance guys! |

no probs for you!

This shouldn't have posed any problems.. even a full install would have left a couple of gig for you to play with the system. Next time look more carefully at what packages you install initially and then look in your /etc/init.d start up scripts list to see if you are running unnecessary daemons etc, or you could run serviceconf from a terminal for a GUI into the same stuff. It would run better than any machine I've ever used! DOn't even worry about it. That should be more than enough for even a really chubby workstation install. Quote:
If you just want a desktop tool for internet use, w/p, and some games, Mandrake is cool. RedHat is good, cos there's loads of info out there on the web and it's quite easy to get support and books. I have never used SuSE or Debian, so can't comment, but I have seen SuSE running and it looks lurrrvely! If you feel smart and want to build all your packages from source and maybe run a project box without all the GUI trimmings, somthing like Slackware is a good option, but it's package management systems is fairly opaque and it doesn't barf cleanly like RH et al... see ya Christo (not in Scottland, but wish I was!)
