Almost any will work!!!
If you only need the plain text based commands to work with your linux distro, you can use almost any linux distro. You just choose to install a minimum system * W H I T H O U T * graphic interface (X11 or whatever). Then your good to go, that is if your old mainboard supports booting from CD.
As for you wanting a GUI with your old machine, the best choice would be to not install KMD, Gnome or any of the "heavy" window handlers. Use The old ones like vfmw, Xfree, or something like that (don't remember the exact names). One of these would work just fine; Debian, Slackware, SuSE, RedHat, Mandrake, .... Enjoy!
