how manny users can linux support

Around how many users can a linux box support? Is there a performance hit if you have too manny users on a machine? I 'm asking because I was thinking about those hosting companies that make tons of users. What about 2000 users, is that alot?
Some day I'll create a smart quote to put here.

The actual number of users with accounts on the machine should only be limited by the amount of disk space you have; performance may degrade when you have too many users accessing the server at the same time for your connection speed or hardware. Thus, the answer really depends on how often people use their accounts, how fast your connection is, and how much RAM you have.
