map drive from winbox to linbox using samba problem !!

I have succesfully setup a samba server.

I can mount from the linuxbox the shares of the winbox and linuxbox, but when I try to access the linuxbox from my winbox I get

\\Linux accessible

The Network Path was not found.

I can also ping each computer from both machines

The log file from samber show the following

[2002/07/18 19:04:00, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(540)
write_socket_data: write failure. Error = Connection reset by peer
[2002/07/18 19:04:00, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket(565)
write_socket: Error writing 4 bytes to socket 7: ERRNO = Connection reset by peer

Error writing 4 bytes to client. -1. Exiting
[2002/07/18 19:04:10, 0] lib/util_sock.c:write_socket_data(540)

The anoying thing is, this all worked the last time I booted my linuxbox up.

Can anyone help !!!

it makes not much sense that it worked on the last boot but now not anymore... unless you changed configuration.

with your second post, this error can probably be circumvented adding the line:

192.168.1.1 windows

to your /etc/hosts on linux AND your c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (path depends on your windows version)

if not, you might consider setting up a DNS server (either on your win2k/xp box or your linux machine). read the how-to for this, it´s quite easy to do.... afaik there is also a gui frontend to bind in kde (and gnome probably too).

are you running a firewall?

Adding those lines to the host file has made no difference.

When I reboot my linuxbox into window the two computer can browse each other fine. That makes me wonder if its something to do with the samber configuration

did you setup your windows machine to be member of a domain? you should not or
- either log on only locally
- or setup samba to be the domain server
- or setup samba to be member of the domain too (never did this before though...)

what do you mean by "netbios name"? (which configuration directive?)

I have none of the above set up.

The netbios name is in the main global configurations for samber

if you can't connect to a samba machine from a window machine, im willing to bet its because your username/passwd from the windows machine isnt a valid user on your samba machine.
1. set up encrypted passwds on the samba machine, which entails creating seperate passwd file for samba, like smb.passwd or something like that.
2. create an account for the windows user on your samba machine.

however, that usually doesnt give you a "machine not found" error. try doing a "\\ipaddress\share" (ip address of samba machine) in your run box of your windows machine. if that doesnt work, try doing a find computer on that same ip.

p.s. the naming convention is "box" for unix computers, not "winbox", thats just bad manners. heh.

from you:
try doing a find computer on that same ip.

windows will alert you if this happens...

winbox? this could be reality right now already ... did you hear of lindows OS? i am very curious though i did not yet have the time to test it yet...

to rshinwell:
ah ja, sorry, i told you to look in /etc/hosts, for netbios names it actually is /etc/lmhosts!

regarding the reboot, try them anyway ive heard "i didnt change anything" before.

regarding "try the same ip", im not sure what windows will alert you of, i dont mean make both machines the same ip, i mean do a search from his windows machine in the "start/find/computer" box for the samba machine (the same ip as in the previous sentence).

lastly, regarding lindows, looks like another distro "based" off debian, statement still stands. heh.
