Mem leak in RH9, any suggestions?

Ok I loaded RedHat 9.0...services include
vsftp, apache, samba, and most basic utils.

System is a AMD 850 Athlon with MSI MB, 640mb pc133 ram, 20 gb maxtor drive, farallon pci 10/100 nic, and a ATI Rage pro LT video.

When system boots It uses 125mb. If I do anything this includes just opening the x-windows menu the mem starts to crawl up. Just to open the mozilla web browser the system crawls up to 195mb +/-. It takes just a matter of minutes if your trying to browse or do anything for the system to reach the peak of 640mb. Then I have all sorts of problems and have to reboot. In short I have turned off ftp and apache, but the problem still exists. Is there a HW incompatability? Any suggestions? If you need more info on my system please be specific. Thanks in advance. I think tonight Im going to try removing my video card and putting in my geforce card...

Hi, I had the same experince, excessive ram consumption and SLOOW performance / responce.
It seem to help (alot) changing the /etc/sysconfig/i18n file, from

LANG="en_US.UTF-8:en_US_en"

to

LANG="C"

So to me, the problem seems to be i18n / UTF related.

I've also recompiled the kernel (2.4.20-9) with UDMA - IDE support enabled, wich increased the throughput by a factor of 10 ! (from 2.83MB/s to 28.3MB/s)

Regards
Poul
