Modem busy?
When I try to dial up to the internet, it says my modem is busy. I pick up the phone and get a dial tone, so it's not busy.
What could be causing this problem and how do I fix it? |

It doesn't mean that the line is busy, it means that the modem device is actually busy.
Some software will most likely have tried communicating with it and its got hung somewhere along the way.. I have the same problem sometimes, and I find a reeboot will help I'm sure there will be a way to sort it properly, but im buggered if i know ![]()

Are you sure you're actually querying the modem? If you try talking to /dev/tty02 for example and that's not your modem, but it IS some other device, you may get a "Modem is Busy" response. Have you successfully used this modem to dial up before?

No, I havn't used the modem in Linux before. It's on COM3 in Windows, so I tell Linux to use /dev/tty02 and it says "Modem busy". When I try to use something like /dev/modem or /dev/tty01 it says there is no responce.
I've tried rebooting the system too. No worky |

Aha... you haven't used it yet...
In that case, are you certain your modem will work in Linux? Go to the Winmodems are not modems page to check it out. Quote:

Rendy, you can stop your adsl modem by getting the proces id of the modem driver with pidof modem_run and then killing it with kill -INT <proces id>.Shutting down the connection is done with pid pppd and kill -INT <proces id>.

Most likely solution: you need to go get a driver to make the modem work. Gather up the specs on your modem, hit the link I provided before, and check for your modem in the database. If you find it, it will have one of the following listings:
WM - Basically: good luck sucker ...LM - Might work if you can find vendor provided drivers for Linux (bear in mind you'll need to get the CHIPSET info, not the name of the modem or brand of modem to find those drivers) OK - Supported in Linux (these are not common...) ? - Unknown whether it can or cannot work in Linux, hey... it's better than WM. Check that database first, then check back here and post the results of your query. |
