Modem troubles (modem goes off hook but does not dial!)

I have this wierd modem problem...

I am running Suse 8.2 on an emachines T2460 with an internal PCI modem (smlink). I downloaded and complied the drivers for the modem and it seems to work just fine (if I query the modem, i get the right responses).

However, when I use kinternet or kppp to dial up... the modem goes off hook but does not actually dial the number! The only thing i could think off, was the init string... which i changed to just a simple ATZ.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,

Chet

Lots of people come in here and gripe about kppp (and rp3, but you probably don't have that since it's Red Hat) and I've never gotten it (them) to work right either. I suggest trying to use wvdial or even minicom to do a more "direct" dial up without that extra layer of software fluff. wvdial is pretty easy to set up, just check out the wvdial and wvdial.conf manpages.

One thing I might also suggest is checking /var/log/messages to see if there are any error messages from kppp in it that you're missing because of the GUI interface.
