new xft hack not working for me
Hello
Although the installation instructions for David Chester's xft hack seem so simple it doesn't work for me.
Would it help to disable xfs?
Oh BTW I'm running cpbotha's XFree4.1 on debian potato.
Any help appreciated, I want that blurry look.
Robert

you donīt supply much information about what you are trying to to...
general: itīs a hack, so itīs for hackers only. if you cannot make it work, you are not a hacker.
i cannot access this url at all (unable to connect to remote host).
if you could supply some more info on what you are trying to do exactly, maybe i can help....

Sorry - this was such hot news all around the internet that I thought almost everybody heard of it.
Basically it is a minor change in libXft that should give you more anti-aliased fonts.
The installation instructions come down to overwrite the old version with the new and restart XFree.
It didn't work for me no matter if xfs and xfstt were running or not.

what i am trying to say is that even though maybe most people know about xft / this hack, your description is still of no use for helping you. "it does not work"...
do you get errors, is it just not any different from before? what happens and what did you try already?
did you shutdown X before like told in the article you posted (today i can access this url )
you need to overwrite the lib on a text-terminal only. use "init 2" or "init s" or whatever your distributor set up for you for shutting down X.
he did not say, xft or xfstt should not be running, itīs the whole X system!

First of all: thanks for your sharing.

I admit being pretty much negligent on describing the problem because it just seems so easy on his web page.
I just followed the description, restarting X without xfs/xfstt were the next steps after it didn't work with all the servers running.
I wasn't able to spot any errors - everything is just like before. Do you have an idea which logfiles to check?

nope, no logfiles for hacks unless the haxor implemented them.
for the last time now: what do you mean by "it does not work"? do you just have no difference at all or does X not start? does xfstt or xfs not start or what?
did you try the single-user mode thing?
do you know at all what i am talking about?
sorry if this seems rude to you, but your ignorance is starting to make me mad. can you please answer these questions? there is no way helping you without knowing the EXACT answers to these...

Sorry again for being unclear. English is not my natural language either - and I don't know much about XFree.

exactly, no difference

They do work and deliver fonts. If I comment them out in XF86Config-4 everything still works but I have not-quite-as-nice-fonts (intrinsic x fonts only?).
I thought maybe libXft is only used by embedded X font rendering and X would use the fonts delivered by xfs* instead if configured.
That's why they weren't running on my 2nd attempt.
> did you try the single-user mode thing?
libXft was replaced in single user mode, without x running - just like suggested on the website.
> do you know at all what i am talking about?
Yes I do.

Thanks again for your help but I don't want anybody to waste time. I thought there was a quick hint that would fix it, maybe something that has to do with the extra font servers I have running.
After all it's not that important for me.
