Agreed, MPlayer is hands down the best media player for Linux out there, especially when comparing "can it play ____" to other media players. There's practically nothing that MPlayer can't play (given the correct codec being installed, and they've hacked many codecs of their own, including a decent Sorenson one).
For your situation, since they don't have RH8 RPMs, I'd say to grab the source RPMs from the bottom of this page - http://www.piorunek.pl/~dominik/linux/pkgs/mplayer/ and then build your own RPMs from those source RPMs. |

Again, MPlayer is the best media player out there. But Xine is also very good, easier to install, and is much better with DVDs, if you have a DVD player.
