    On recreate user error

I created a user with useradd. I immediately I deleted it using userdel. I saw the home directory was still there. I got rid of the home directory.

I try to recreate the user with the useradd command and I receive the error
    user '<name>' already exists
What do I have to do to recreate this user id?

Is the username still listed in /etc/passwd? Have you some kind of external authentication system configured (LDAP, AD, etc)?
