RH 8.0 as a server?
My budget (and an urge to not use Microsoft anymore) has made me consider Linux.
I need to make a very small database-server with max 5 clients. Is it possible to do that with RH 8.0? I think it says so on their homepage, but I'm not sure (maybe because I'm too used to MS Win). Anybody here has any experience in this particular area? best regards bentzn |

Linux is a multi user environment, which means that it is perfect as a server...

redhat 8.0 is more than suitable for server-end use. You can run it without X-windows (the GUI) and you can easily configure the services that you want to make available.. http, ftp, mysql database... etc
go for it ! christo

I use RH 7.3 for a number of different special-purpose and general servers- database, web, mail, list-servers and the like. It's fabulous, and I don't imagine they broke everything going to 8.0 (though I'm waiting for the .1 release before I try it out. . .)

I have a Duron 650MHz running RH7.3 (without a GUI). It has no monitor/keyboard/mouse, i just SSH into it if needs be. It runs MySQL, Apache, Tomcat, Postgres, Sendmail, Samba etc (until recently this was with 64MB of RAM, but tomcat was starting to make it struggle). It has never crashed.
So a db server for five users? - do it. I have an install of RH8.0 but that's really to check out the desktop capabilities of the OS, rather than the server capabilities. If you're going to do this on legacy hardware, note this: a totally blank install (i.e. no extra packages selected) of RH7.3 is 355MB whereas RH8.0 is 473MB. depends how minimalist you plan to be... Call this a recommendation!

Thank you all for your responses.
I didn't get any email-notice of your answers, so it took a while... I'll continue with Linux. |
