Samba on Linux and XP Home Edition
Anyone out there know how to get around the deliberate network hobbling of XP Home in order to access a Samba server?

Only way to be less descriptive would have been not to post at all...
If you want to get around Samba or XP, just donīt use it. If you want to get around networking them - just donīt do it. If you wanted to ask how to configure it, read the manual. If you want an easy way to configure samba, use swat ...If you have a specific problem, ask a specific question. I am not having any trouble with networking them at all. My last setup (freeBSD port) was done in three minutes.

The specifity of the issue in question may be found here:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcas...xp_home_pro.asp The issue is that an XP Home Edition is hobbled not to connect to a domain server. In the case of samba, you may access resources, but not utilize it as a domain server. Are there any known work arounds for this? Possible TweakUI? |

Huh, thatīs odd. I never noticed that. But just got it confirmed on microsoft.com
[edit because i wrote first and thought then...] i donīt think there is a workaround. but you might be able to rip off the dlls and registry settings from an XP Pro installation. Still, no idea how. [/edit] Last edited by M.Hirsch : February 6th, 2003 at 12:23 PM. |

I have heard of really hacked work arounds that you can do to force Windows XP Home to login to a domain but its not pretty. When you setup XP Pro to login to a domain it changes the login section to look exactly like Win 2K. The code and dlls to do this wouldnt be included in the home edition so it would be quite an extensive procedure.
