Shadowed MD5 Passwords

I'm running RedHat 7.3. I use md5 shadowed passwords and when I was checking out my /etc/shadow file I noticed that my passwords were longer than normal (34 characters as opposed to 32) and they all began with "$1$" (without the quotes).

Can anyone shed some light on why that is there or at least point me in the right direction where I can read about it?

Thanks,
Mike
