Sick of ubuntu....

I would like a new linux distro.
But there are so many, I just don't know what to pick.
I've been using ubuntu for like 2 years or more and I'm just done with it.

Some things that I want out of the new distro are:

Since I like learning, I want the distro to NOT be so user-friendly. I want a challenge. Just anything new to learn would be amazing.

I need wireless support out of the box though , since that's the only source of internet I have around here..

I need it to be installable from usb, since i'm using a netbook without a cd drive.

And I would like it to look good.

Lol any suggestions?

> I want the distro to NOT be so user-friendly.
You can always press ctrl-alt-f1 and do all your work at the command prompt.

ctrl-alt-f7 if you want to get back to the GUI

> I need wireless support out of the box though
You need to check the hardware list of each distro carefully then. A netbook with an esoteric wireless network might be a bit low on the support side.

Since you didn't actually mention your 'box', we could only guess.
But even if you did, why would we want to do the grunt work of finding out which distro, since you're on a "Just anything new to learn would be amazing." kick.

> And I would like it to look good.
Like Ubuntu

http://www.slackware.com/ is considered to be one of "core" distros for the hardened Linux crowd.

No doubt you know about http://distrowatch.com/ as being a good central point for linking to lots of distro's.

Welcome to the "I am a Linux fan but I don't want to be treated as an idiot" club That's exactly one of the reasons I was never able to digest Ubuntu.

I am personally a very big fan of Red Hat based distros so my ultimate choice when it comes to Linux desktop distros is Fedora. I have been using it for many many years and while it retains a sane level of user friendliness it still offers a great opportunity to learn so many things.

Fedora can also be installed via USB without any problems.

As for it appearance Fedora was considered to have one of the most appealing looks throughout the last couple of years. Either way looks is something you can always change if you don't like it so I would not make an issue of that

In exactly 5 days Fedora 14 (codenamed "Laughlin") will be released so there is your chance to try it out.

If you want a real challenge, go with Gentoo. That will keep you busy for a while, and trust me, you will learn a lot by just installing it.

Also being a long time RedHat user, I second the vote for Fedora.

I'm probably not considered a long time user as some of the other veterans around here, but I'll throw in my vote for Fedora as well.... That's what I started using however many years ago when I wanted to start creating my own servers, and have been happy with it since. Had 1 serious issue with it, but was probably some weird fluke... thoroughly pissed me off, but hey.. I'm still using it, so guess I forgave it.

I'm gonna try the live version out in a minute

Does anyone have a opinion on Sabayon Linux?
I saw it on Distro watch. It doesn't look half bad

Just two words... "Gentoo based" That should be enough to inform you that you are to expect some really interesting adventures with it. For me personally the "Gentoo adventure" ended with a a permanent Game over

BTW that what you are looking at on the Sabayon screenshot is actually KDE 4, something that can be easily installed on Fedora and is available on the Fedora DVD image.

I wouldn't let Gentoo anywhere near a netbook: you'd spend half your life waiting for things to compile on that sort of a CPU.

Debian is the base upon which Ubuntu (and many other distros) is based. Might be worth a look.

I use Debian, without a GUI, for all my servers. That's fun.

My home machine has a Belkin wireless nic and I tried many different flavours of Linux before I found one that would work with it - Mepis 3.2(I think it was). I've just upgraded it to 3.5, which seems OK apart from trashing VirtualBox. I also upgraded the GUI to the latest KDE.... I really don't like it! I'll be going back to the older KDE a.s.a.p. :-) Mepis is another Debian based one.

Slackware is good and solid.

If you want a challenge - look at Oracle/Sun Solaris (I'm not sure if that can be usb based). It seems to use different terminology to all the other distros I've seen.
