Open some mixer program (if you use KDE or GNOME, you should have one in the menu) and check the volume settings.

Btw, I don't quite understand you poll ... where's the "yes, definitely" option? Wtf is the RedHat Linix Bible supposed to be? Anyway, I like SuSE's manuals best

I Have found somehtings very strange. M using A i810 system with 15 Gig HDD and 64 MB RAM and PIII cpu. My sys have 3 sound i/o audio pins.
o o o Dpin connecter for midi
Line In Mic Line out
On "Line out" sound is mono only i.e. left side and no right side. I found this problem only now when I used head phone. I normally use an 80 Watt Amp and this amp is capable of converting mono to stereo so I never found this problem. This problem is in both Win98SE and Linux. Also When I select 4spkr system from mixer, inwin98se, the "Line in" pin starts giving sound and "Line in" function is disabled. On this pin sound is stereo. In Linux the mixer don't show any thing like 4 spkr system. It just shows a band of vol controls for mic and other things.

What can be the problem.

The 4-speakers-option is available in Linux, too.

Run
Code:
rmmod cmpci
insmod cmpci four_ch=1

If that works (4 ch. sound), look into your /etc/conf.modules for a line like
Code:
alias sound cmpci
Nearby should be the four_ch setting ... set it to 1 in the file and save. Now this will be enabled at boot.

And read the readme for info.

Can you say what you actually did that didn't work and how it didn't? It's a bit hard to read your thoughts and I don't have the time to hack into your box to do it myself

Btw, what I suggested does not depend in any way on your drivers' actual location.

Geek code: yeah! They're kewl.

Hmmm ... afaik the file exists in RedHat ... were you logged in as root? How did you search for it?

And, btw, could you get 4-ch. sound to work with the rmmod/insmod commands? Cuz otherwise there's no point in changing stuff in conf.modules.

About the poll - how is it related to your topic? Also, as said, not all answer categories are represented.

Guys, when making a poll, think logically, damnit! Nearly all the user-posted polls I see on message boards are illogical and thus do not tell anything and I don't like that.

Yes. No. Be sure to log on as root. And it didn't work for kumar, so it won't necessarily work for you. What distro are you using, by the way?

Self-confidence taken to the extreme. The extreme minimum, to be precise. This is Linux, not Windoze. If you break it, you'll learn. If you never even touch it, you won't know.
