Stable Mail Client?
For the first time in my linux life, I'm really going mad at some of the flakiness of Gtk apps (Galeon and Balsa). In particular, Balsa, which just can't stay up for any more than 120 seconds. Such a shame. I'm running on a Red Hat 7.2 installation, with a fairly healthy workstation setup.
Anyway, Can anyone recommend a stable, lightweight, but fairly tool-rich mail client? Sonething like Balsa, but one that might manage more than 60 seconds of life... not kmail, (cos I'm bored of it). I notice that there are 11+ pages listed on Freshmeat and I can't be arsed to try them all ![]() btw, am I the only one who has Balsa blues? Christo

I've had good luck with evolution. It's been pretty stable and it is VERY feature rich. It does everything that Outlook does, and far more. I wouldn't say it's lightweight, but it is a great email client.
go to ximian.com and install red carpet, but ONLY INSTALL EVOLUTION (and whatever other software you like from them). Don't install the whole desktop, because it'll take over your computer. Installing the newer version of evolution is probably worth it, it's gotten better and better over time. One thing I like about it is it stores your messages in plain text, making it easy for you to ript through them with perl scripts if you like. It's fast as heck, too. |

You also might consider trying the mail client that comes with Mozilla: Though it is not light-weight.
![]() If you want to try a great full-featured non-GUI client, I would suggest MUTT. Best, parker |

Two more GTK based email GUI clients, Sylpheed -> http://sylpheed.good-day.net/
and Spruce -> http://spruce.sourceforge.net/ I've used them both with fairly good result. My beta version of Evolution keeps crashing and contains some irritating bugs which makes it useless. Should probably upgrade it since the newer versions seems promising... Although I think I'll second the Mutt option, as it has really grown on me... ![]() //NoXcuz

Sypheed wins
woooooaaahh!!
Sypheed saves the day - compiled first time from source and seemingly stable too. I haven't actually tried spruce, but I'm sure one day I'll get bored/curious, in which case I'll dig out the dusty remenants of this thread and rhapsodise about that one too ![]() thanks all thanks noXcuz christo |
