Ehrm, the Red Hat bible... I thought you said you were using SuSE?
Not that the basics differ that much though...

and you linux users think everyone should be using linux

Case study: I just spend the last 48 hours trying to get my modem to work under Linux... modem worked just as well under windoze by just plugging it in... still can't use kppp or rp3 to "normally" dial-up because I get gtk errors (haven't upgraded gtk to latest package yet, so we'll see if that fixes it before asking any questions ) and I can't just run a wvdial script because I can't figure out how to pass DNS entries to it, without which, I can't dial to my ISP (note: putting them in /etc/resolv.conf is necessary for me, but not enough...)

Conclusion: Linux is for people with 1) a lot of time on their hands 2) a *serious* development / administration environment.

Look dude, compiling a new kernels not in and of itself hard. The steps:
1. Get a kernel from http://www.kernel.org
2. Decompress it in the folder of your choice (preferrably where it will be out of the way)
3. Run "make mrproper"
4. Run "make menuconfig"*
5. Run "make dep; make clean; make bzImage"*
6. Copy the bzImage file created in the last step into /boot with a better name (i.e. vmlinuz-2.x.x)
7. Edit your /etc/lilo.conf file so that it includes this new kernel (use the existing entry as a working base, but DON'T remove it yet!)
8. Run /sbin/lilo (assuming you're using LILO)
9. Reboot and test the new kernel.

*NOTES: Step 4 is where you need to be careful. Make sure you understand what your setting as you set options. If not, it's best to just go with what the help section gives you or take the default.

Step 5 may take awhile depending on your hardware and what options you chose.

I probably shouldn't have said that, lets keep this thread on topic.

My basis for that comment is not that I dislike linux or to start a flame war. I just think I've seen one to many linux rulez windows blowz, your a windows looser threads on this and every other linux forum.

What's more disturbing is that this leads the wrong crowd of people toward something they have no desire or commitment to learn.

At first I questioned whether Degar was here because he wanted to learn linux or because someone told him he and his mom should be using it. The fact that he's buying a book certainly proves the former. The way this thread started I never would have guessed.

Ah,I see that you are using my favorite quote

Ctb,I dont really agree with "Conclusion: Linux is for people with 1) a lot of time on their hands 2) a *serious* development / administration environment.".I had Red Hat installed and a Desktop Enviroment running in like 30 minutes (and I was a complete Linux newbie).I can do all the stuff(e-mail,icq,browsing the web) that I did on my Windows box as quickly with Linux.
