What's the big difference between Linux and Unix?

it´s like if you ask: what is the difference between an XJ-12 and a jaguar? linux is ONE unix (out of about 20-30 that i can think of). "unix" as such is just a specification for operating systems, not a software product!

hmm, al i know about jaguar is that its a catlike creature, but i guess u mean an other jaguar
well then there's another stupid question:
Whats the big difference between suse, redhat, debian and the others (if there are) that publish linux?

linux as such is only a os kernel with some other little tools.

the distributors take this kernel, search the ´web (freshmeat) for all free usable software for linux and put it on cd-roms. then they make a manual and write configuration tools and installation programs.

so: if you know how to configure linux as such (edit the right text files, compile & install from source (aka CVS tree)), you are independent of distros. if not, you´ll notice slight differences in configuration like yast and yast2 are only available on suse, sysconf is only on redhat and so on.

there is bigger and smaller distros, but my idea is: the more cds you get, the more unlikely you need to download anything from the web. so get one with at least 4 CDs (for SuSE get the "professional" version, not "personal"!)

some distributions aim for a special purpose (not the windows user switching to linux and expecting doubleclick-installers and plug-n-play USB), eg. webservers, firewalls, email-servers, cell phones, ...
they are quite different then (as you can imagine)
