tar files problems

Hi guys, I would like to know if you guys can help this nuisance that I've been having for some time. I have been having trouble opening any tar,gz files without getting tar (child) errors in the terminal. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

tar error

This is the error I get when I tried to open any tar.gz files in the terminal.

# tar zxvf mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-1.3-sea.tar.gz
tar (child): mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-1.3-sea.tar.gz:Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar (child):Error is not recoverable:exiting now
tar:Child returned status 2
tar:Error exit delayed from previous errors

As you can imagion this happens anytime want I went to open any tar.gz files.

What are the permissions on the folder that you're trying to extract the tarfile in?
