upgrading Gnome?
Hi guys I started out just wanting to upgrade my installation of Galeon, but found that I need to upgrade to a more recent Gnome release - well, these are the messages I get, anyway:
checking for GNOME - version >= 1.2.8... yes checking for additional GNOME modules... gdk_pixbuf*** vfs library is not installed configure: error: *** GNOME 1.2.8 or better is required. *** gdk-pixbuf 0.11.0 or better is required. *** gnome-vfs 1.0.1 or better is required. *** libglade 0.13 or better is required. *** libxml 1.8.14 or better is required. *** oaf 0.6.5 or better is required. Now ,to start with, I don't know where to find out my current version, and then secondly, I don't know where to find an upgrade. I select "get gnome" on gnome.org, and there's a lot about the new Gnome 2, but no upgrade downloads or documentation... Perhaps I'm looking in the wrong place. er I'm totally lost with this Gnome stufff. I'm sat on a RedHat machine, fumbling around with rpm's and ximian redcarpet, being told that I need to install whole lists of packages - all with bizarre names and stuff. It all makes me wanna throw Slackware on this machine and do the whole lot from source So.. I guess the question is Where can I find an easy to install gnome upgrade which will accommodate the newer releases of Gnome applications? merci ! Christo

First of all, if you look at the error messages you got, you'll notice that the first one confirms you have a version of GNOME later then 1.2.8, which means you needn't necessarily upgrade GNOME to upgrade Galeon.
I stalls on a selection of libraries, most (all?) related to GNOME, which you don't have (such as the gdk_pixbuf library). That said, it's probably worth getting GNOME 2 if you don't already have it, and making sure you have all of the libraries while you''re at it. That's best done with your distribution's own tools. If they bring up dependency problems, telling you that you need to install various libraries, then try to download them from the RedHat ftp site and install them as well. You can install GNOME without a lot of the libraries, but as this case shows, it often helps having them all. |
