webcam on slackware

hey guys,

I have acquired a Logitech Quickcam Express camera thing.. and I'm dangling it out the back of my server at home.. The system is running a beta of Slackware 9 (2.4.19 kernel).

I have recompiled the kernel for V4L support and USB support (it's a usb camera)

I have created a new video device file using:
mknod /dev/video c 81 0

I have extracted, compiled and installed the qce-ga-0.40c driver module.

But what do I do now? I can't find any software to actually use the camera and take pictures. I have looked in the list here and the only NON-GUI option (I'm not running X) is camE, but any attempts to compile it barf with :

/bin/sh: line 1: giblib-config: command not found
webcam.c:27:20: giblib.h: No such file or directory
webcam.c:101: parse error before '*' token
webcam.c:101: warning: type defaults to `int' in declaration of `title_style'
webcam.c:101: warning: data definition has no type or storage class
webcam.c:102: parse error before '*' token......... bla bla bla bla bla.....

shall I just give up now ?

christo

Well, I have just checked that I can read my video device file like so:

root@brezhnev:~# cat /dev/video > arse.tmp

root@brezhnev:~# ls -al arse.tmp
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2128896 Nov 14 08:21 arse.tmp

waHey!

And I have been recommended a commandline image capturing thingey called vidcat, which is part of w3cam. This link is dea, so I'm gonna trawl a bit and see if I can find it elsewhere...

all installed, but I'm getting some *really* dark images... I have fiddled with vidcat, but can't get them any brighter... here's one I did earlier: http://212.18.226.160/ha.jpg It's really really dark. The small light patch to the right is my laptop screen, about 10 feet from the camera....

So I'm essentially up and running, but any ideas on how to brighten these images would be really handy... I'll dry during daylight hours tomorrow too.. with the curtains open etc.

later,
christo
