Which OS should I get? 1Ghz CPU and 256MB RAM
Hey guys. I have an older PC that I want to use to learn linux. It has a 1GHz P3 or Celeron (can't remember), and 256 MB of ram. What would be the best OS for me to use?

Linux can generally be run on older machines... As for a good learning flavor, I would suggest Fedora Core.

I'm assuming you mean "which distribution of Linux" vs. which OS to choose.

Your question, to me at least, is open for interpretation.

If you really want to learn linux and make the best of that hardware, I'd say Slackware or Debian.

For a beginner, however, the best choice might be Ubuntu or Fedora as hiker mentioned. They'll still make good use of that hardware but the eye candy you'll usually find in distros like these can bog a system down with only 256MB. Steer clear of KDE, choose a modest window manager such as Fluxbox (or even Gnome) and you should be fine. Make sure you create a 512MB swap partition.

The irony being that I'm posting this with friggin' M$ Vista because the new laptop I just bought doesn't have full Linux driver support yet. c'mon madwifi!

Damn insomnia has me trolling this time of morning *sigh* That and there is nothing good on TV...and it seems that TV guide has been playing without me knowing.

I agree but for some reason my girlfriend's computer and my other storage box have 256MB of RAM and run smooth (they use xUbuntu and Gnome. I'm too lazy to install anything else, sue me )

If you are a started I recommend an Ubuntu distro because it is based on Debian and will get you used to it. I say to learn Linux it is best to just jump on in, play with it, have fun with it. Mess it up if you want, you can just reinstall if you see fit.

HP dv6000? Just a wild guess. My laptop doesn't seem to run any Linux because it is GAY...and when it does it just has to be ArkLinux and even this it lags...ironic as my laptop has 4 gigs of RAM.

That is more than enough CPU. Can you put more RAM into it cheaply? The more the better, as with any OS.
512 expands your options, and a gig would be enough to do about anything.

What do you mean by "learn linux"?
What level of learning do you want?

You can use any distro you feel like, perhaps starting with Damn Small Linux for a very low end thing, I ran it on a P233 with 386MB of ram.

Most folks just sticking their toes into it like Ubuntu.
But if you want a more hands on experience, debian may be a good match.

or you could do gentoo or BSD
