What version of Windows are you comparing it with? Vista?

You could also try Windows 7 ![]() Regards |

Could be a number of factors like your hardware for instance, if you don't have at least 2 gigs of ram, Vista struggles in my experience, where as linux doesn't need that much memory to run.

Think of the features that Vista has compared to Linux. Is it really any surprise that Vista takes a lot more to run, compared to Linux? Vista is so bloated, try Windows 7 instead. It's supposed to run faster.

So...
Windows is often known for performing slower than *nix systems. The most common culprit of this is all the *additional* things that are running in the background that *nix systems don't have. First of all, are you comparing two like systems in terms of hardware. Like said above this needs to be consistent in order to compare apples to apples. Secondly, are you comparing two like-used systems? If you installed windows 4 years ago and have been using it and are now comparing it to a newly installed *nix OS, the results will be skewed due to the software buildup that happens over time and use. Finally, some general ideas why *nix is faster than windows. - The registry - When Windows boots up, it loads the ENTIRE registry into memory. That's right, the whole thing, every time. This is one reason why over time Windows slows down, especially at bootup. So you installed that Left 4 Dead demo and removed it after you were done? No biggie, right? well, not exactly. Most often registry keys are left behind even after uninstalls. That also means that more and more memory is consumed as the registry grows since the whole thing is kept in RAM. - Non specific kernel efficiencies - I'm not an OS programmer, nor have I ever delved deep into the specifics of the kernels but I'm told that the Linux kernel has some improvements over Windows. If this is faster, it shows throughout the whole system.

you also got to look at well looks.
vista looks way better than any linux system i have used. i think thats one of the major reasons it takes up so much time to load up. |
