will XF4.1 -> XF4.2 upgrade break my system?
In a recent thread I asked for help with an xft hack that produces smooth fonts all over your desktop.
In the meantime I continued playing around on another system (ydl2.1) which ships with XFree86-4.1.0. Since the patch is for XFree86-4.2.0 I downloaded the 4.2 SRPM, patched it and rebuilt the RPM. Now the question Is it possible to replace the working XF4.1 installation with my patched 4.2 without corrupting the whole installation? Thanks in advance Robert |

in general yes, because i donīt consider a non-working X-Windows a corrupted system. you can still boot to the command line and restore your backup that you made before testing stuff like this
![]() worst case would be x-windows does not startup anymore, most likely no data corruption at all. if you are not used to the command line, donīt try this!
