X On Slackware 8.1

Well I have a clean install of Slackware 8.1, and when I try to start X Windows with KDE, it just freezes.

Did I do something wrong?

My problems with X were relating to something else.. but in your case, it could easily be something in your X config. connect as root, the open the file /etc/X11/Xf86config There are sections in here for all your input and output devices... and in the display/monitor bits you will need to enter your refresh rates and resolutions for your screen.. you can enter a few and it will keep testing till it finds the right one.
