yellow dog install - advice?
I have an old UMAX 600 that I'm about to convert to a Yellow Dog Linux machine.
I downloaded the OS from an FTP site, and have it stored on my PC. Total file size is 1.37 GB. I had hoped to burn an install CD, but the total file size is too large. I'll need to split the files into 2 CD's. Here's my question: w/ the following list of files & folders, which ones are critcal, and need to be on the 1st CD for the install, and which files & folders are extra, and can wait until the OS is installed? [folder] extras [folder] extras2 [folder] install [folder] misc [folder] updates [folder] YellowDog [file] .yup.db.diff [file] .yup.db.init [file] .yup.db.list [file] .yup.db.stat [file] COPYING [file] CREDITS [file] README [file] RELEASE_NOTES [file] RPM-GPG-KEY My best guess is that the files, and folder install, updates, YellowDog should be on CD1, and that the rest can wait for CD2. Any advice? Anyone else go through this before ? Thanks ... |

Did you downloaded the ISO or just a bunch of files? If YDL are minimally serious they should have gave you 2 ISO files.
I never touched YDL but my guess is that you should put: YD, install, updates and the extras. I guess that the .yup are important so shove them into the first cd as well.

hmm... I'll check, but don't recall the ISO files in the directories.
What is their significance? (I've used Linux, just never had to install it before) Thanks. ... |

Yes there should be .ISO files. I just checked on their site and ended up with this: ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/iso/README
Which has several of them but they only fit one cd so I don't know if it has has many stuff. And I don't know what those packages are, I just guessed by their names that they might be usefull. Hope you're not wasting too much bandwith. ![]() Ho and one more thing, I don't know why I didn't told you but I don't think it would had worked if you simply copied the file as-is in the CD, it probably has a boot-record for it to be bootable, unless you use a floppy. Good luck. |

hmmm... a boot record? How does one create that? Is there a software app for doing this?

There's an app for everything. But the boot record is in the ISO image (if it's bootable, which I'm pretty sure it is). And just like the README says, set your software to ~"Burn as ISO" and don't copy/mount the files. Don't worry, just burn it.

riv, you have been extremely helpful in all of this... I truly appreciate the time you've taken to thoroughly answer my questions.
It looks as if I should connect with the official yellowdog FTP site to recheck the files I downloaded... their site was unavailable when I first attempted to do this, so my files came from a mirror in japan... it appears that the ISO's were missing from this download. Thanks again! I'll let you know how it goes once I assimilate this old UMAX Mac clone into Linux box. ![]() |

Don't forget to tell us if it worked or not, that way we know if that actually worked.
And well you just learned that mirrors usually don't have all the files. ![]() |

I will be sure to let you know how it works out...
and yeah, wish someone wouldv'e warned me that the mirrors aren't 100%! Thanks! ![]() |
