Unhappy Adding sdram to G3 B & W causes crash

I'm fairly new to screwing around with my Blue and White G3. I've upgraded to a G4 Encore/Zif 800 processor from OWC and ordered thier 256 sdram (4). This is to do editing with iMovie with a newly installed DVD burner. However, when I installed it it would run fine for awhile, then my computer would crash ordering me to shut it down. Often this will happen while the computer is idle. Then, sometimes it would not reboot properly and I'd get the apple on my screen with lines running through it horizontally.
I then noticed on their (OWC) website that this particular (cheaper) sdram may not work on all G3's because of a certain memory controller issue and that a more expensive sdram would be required. So I returned my four and upgraded to two of these 256 sdram.
I recieved them today and am experiencing the same problem after installing two strips on their own. When I use the original (192) my computer does not crash, ever.
I have reset the NVRAM, Zapped the PRAM and reset the Cuda per OWC instructions.
Any suggestions? Am I stuck with using the original memory?
Thanks,
Lloyd

I'm not sure what memory a G3 requires but if your original memory chip is working then I would look for another one of them, of the same size of bigger. I'd check out www.crucial.com and look for memory thats proven to works with your computer.

Mark.

I'm using non APPLE PC100 SDRam in my G4 and it seems to work fine. I did read somewhere that MACS can be sensitive to the make of RAM used and that generally cheap RAM does not work well.

Good Luck,
Chris

2 possible solutions

I had this happen, too. Twice, for a different reason each time.

FIRST TIME: Cheap RAM. I saved $18, but it was buggy as hell. I sent it back and got a better grade, then had no problems.

SECOND TIME: I was mix-and-matching RAM, two of the original 256ers and two new ones. It turned out to be this: Two RAM cards were 100MHZ SDRAM, and two were 133 MHz SDRAM. Either the 133 alone, or the 100 alone, worked fine. Together, they worked for a while, then...problems just as you described. Sounds as if your RAM cards are all from the same "batch" though. Are they?
