Alt key? The common name for this key on the Mac is the 'Option' key.
Have you eliminated a bad keyboard as a possibility?
For example, holding down the option key while dragging a file in the finder results in a copy of that file.
For another example, launch TextEdit, and in a new document type 'he' and then press option-escape. You should get a list of words which begin with 'he'...option-escape is the shortcut to the 'Complete' menu item in the Edit Menu.
What exactly are you attempting to do with the Option key in Photoshop & illustrator that isn't working? What version of Photoshop are you using? What version of MacOS are you using?
