Unhappy Cups MAC OS 10.3.6 network printing to Brother HL-5040 Laser Problem

I am having trouble setting up a networked cups printer driver successfully on a Mac OS 10.3.6 for the Brother HL-5040. I set the IP address for my print server, picked the ppd driver downloaded from brother (listed on their site as a PCL cups driver for networking the printer), which I assume would work with the Mac...or should I be looking for another cups driver? I set the printing type to LPR and left the printing cache at default ( or should it be set to lp). I followed the sequence suggested with the downloaded Brother HL-5040 Cups driver at their solutions webpage with no solution yet.
