Damage to Catalog files

Greetings.

I would descibe myself as an "intermediate" mac user. I'm on an older iMac running OS 9.2. The other day I was running Norton Virus (v 7) when Norton 'froze' mid-check. After leaving the machine sit for a while (15+ min) I eventually manually rebooted. Oops. Now both Disk Doctor (booted from CD) and Disk First Aid detect a problem but are unable to fix it it. One symptom is I have a Norton Nav Compression Folder on my desktop that I cannot empty out of trash (I have tried several tricks here including the Stuffit trick and replacing with a same name folder etc). Norton identifies the problem as "damage to catalog file...error 16,075." The only reference I can find to this specific error is on a Mac help form in Greek. Literally in GREEK. I have found references to Diskwarrior and TechProTool as possible solutions to this type of problem but I'm trying to avoid spending $100 for software designed for OS X when I don't even use it. yes I am a cheapskate. Any ideas very much appreciated.
