Well, not really, but people say Bill Gates is the devil because Windows has so many viruses. I'm glad to see that Mac isn't much better.

I guess that's pretty similar to how most Windows viruses don't affect my PCs... but people still say Windows is still so insecure yada yada. It's just nice to see that no software is perfect.

The ratio is still something like a million windows viruses to one mac virus, so don't feel too happy..

And I still wonder how anyone gets infected. I use Windows daily. I visit bad sites. I don't get infected. I use Ad-Aware and Norton. That's it. Oh, and FireFox. Well, that and an run-of-the-mill NAT router. But everyone else uses these simple consumer-grade tools as well. I've NEVER had a virus. Ever. Well, I should add, I don't use Outlook at home. I really don't think most other people do either, what with Hotmail / Gmail / Whatever...

Adrastea0413 agrees: I've had 3 viruses in the past 10 years. Sometimes I wonder why people get so many of them. Anyone
dumb enough to open an emailed .exe file labeled "free xxx pr0n pictures!" deserves to be infected.

Ziff - yes you're a hell of a lot safer if you don't run Outbreak Express or Internet Exploder. IIRC the majority of successful exploits occur via one of these two ( particularly via ActiveX ). The other major vector is people running programs ( "free porn! click here!" etc).

If you do neither of those things, then yes, you should be fairly safe. Especially if you've got SP2 installed. However, this does not change the fact that the average survival time for a windows pc is 17 minutes.

I don't believe that quote. I think the study is biased, that they had a clear idea of what they wanted and set things up to achieve what they wanted. I think that number is nothing more than a cliché.

I believe the way I run Windows is typical. I don't think a significant number of people really do click on "FREE PORN", it's easy enough to find without doing that, and the only people still doing that are 14 year old boys.

I think the biggest threat is not rouge Russian viruses anymore, it's spyware that people willingly install are a part of on-line gambling and free game software, and these very stupid browser helpers (of which Yahoo bar and Google bar are in fact).

palagrim agrees: I use Windows nothing special installed - SP2, AVG and Spybot. Netgear router. No viruses/malware in
ages. But then I don't open attachments and agree to install things ;-) (No rep to give :-( )
