Formatting MacBook Pro

Hi People
Yesturday I was running a program, and I heard some clicking noise from the hard drive, and turned off... Now OSX is not booting, it stays in the little apple at the start, and nothing else... I know it is not the hard drive because still the XP partition runs perfectly.. So what I want? I just want to format the whole HD and install OSX again, but when I insert the install disc, it crashed checking the drive (obviously beacuse the partition is messed up...

Im asking if there's a way to format the HD thru Terminal, or maybe another bootable software. For example, I have a software for PCs called DBAN and its awsome to format drives, but it didnt work with the mac...

Thanx in advance

A linux CD? If it's an isolinux with a prompt to start (fedora, redhat, foresight, ubuntu, debian, just about everything else), then at the boot prompt try `linux noprobe` to get around this `error(?)`.

In that case, I feel you'd be better off with another solution, you'll have to wait until someone posts one.

do you have another computer with firewire? if you do then the easiest solution is to is to get a 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable and connect the mac and other computer together, then hold "T" and boot the mac, it will now show up as a firewire drive on the other computer and you can format the drive/partition from there

if you don't have another computer and don't want to buy the cable then use a Linux CD, here is a CD that will work, you need to download the .iso.bz2, uncompress it to an .iso, then burn the image, and it should boot by holding "C" on boot, when you get it running then you can try these commands to get it fixed

code Code:
Original - code Code
#zero the first 20MB of the OSX partition, this should do it dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2 bs=1M count=20 #when its done (says records in/out) try booting off the Install CD #if that dosen't work then you can try these following commands #zero all of the OSX data partition (will take a while) dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda2 #zero the GTP partition dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1 #zero the drive, if this dosen't fix it then you need a new drive/install CD #this will also erase you windows install and every bit of information on the drive #this will take some time to complete dd if=/dev/zero if=/dev/sda

BTW, before doing any of this, BACK UP what you can!!! this can easily delete stuff you don't want it to, and it zeros your data so software can't recover it
