Intel Macs as fast as PPC Macs?
Looking on MacRumors I found a link to this article
http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1175 Interesting... For those who can't be bothered or don't want to click, summary follows They think that when ported to intel, macs will actually run faster, because the developer preview booted in record time, and ran lots of programs faster, and there was little slowdown running PPC apps under their new emulator thingy, "rosetta". I think its PR, any ideas?

I'm excited about the new technology, yet depressed that I wasted nearly 8Gs on my Dual G5.

Wasted? I don't think so. Your G5 will remain good for many years to come. The software publishers simply aren't going to drop making or updating their software the bulk of the Mac market any time soon - especially considering that Apple is doing a lot to make sure that it easy to build the same app for PPC and Intel based Macs. |

My opinion is that the powerPC macs will have an advantage for a few years to come. I'm envious, 0000.

Agree with ericgorr. I have dived into the ADC a little, and their new concept is "universal binaries" which run natively on both architectures. (not through rosetta)
So the money for a G5 isn't wasted - as long as the x86 hardware stays in the upper price segment, which I expect to happen. M.

The G5 hardware is more powerful despite the clock speeds stated, the problem is short rendering pipelines mean low clock speeds but lots done per clock, so it doesnt come out LOOKING as good in figures, but performs geniusly (sp?) As it is the 2.7Ghz G5 is the most powerful chip on the market. |

I do believe PPC is superior, but you have to remember that the chips they have in the developer intel macs are 3.6 (if im not mistaken). When you look at it, there is more speed, more megahertz. It will be fast, maybe faster, no questions asked.
I will miss altivec on the PPC, cuz it made the applications I wrote with it, fly on my old 800 mhz iMac. |
