Is 2GB sufficient?
Hey all,
With the help of a cool program at my girlfriend's college, I'm probably going to get a Macbook Pro pretty soon. I'm just curious though, is 2GB of RAM sufficient for running programs like Photoshop and Dreamweaver on top of the operating system? Thanks a bunch! |

yea, its fine for just about everything, the only exception is if your running big memory hogs like VMware or Parallels, if your using those then it could easily be a problem, and you should seriously consider more RAM
But for just about all native Mac programs, 2GB will be fine, but it might be nice to have more (will probably be faster with more, but its not slow at all with 2GB)

I got my MBP a few weeks ago (2.4GHz 15") with 2GB of RAM. It runs fairly well (I hate this freaking OS) with 2GB, the only time I notice a slow down is when I'm running Parallels and Photoshop with Firefox (which is a shame because I'm a part time web developer and in a web development oriented program, so those are all necessary most of the time). However, I can drop the memory allocation in both Photoshop and Parallels, so there's always a balance at some point.
If you do want to upgrade to 4GB, don't do it through Apple. They charge, right now, $770 CAD to upgrade to 4GB from 2 - that's an intense rip off, just get it with 2 and buy a pair of 2GB modules from another retailer for $400, less if you try. Hang on to the original modules, though, Apple won't service your machine with third party RAM installed. |
