a problem which shows the error message

Applet MSChat can't start : error : java.lang.ClassFormatError: Bad major version number

in both netscape and explorer.

I have not knowingly changed any settings

Have you installed any new software lately that might have messed with the Java installation? Also, can you run other Java Applets or is it just this one thats causing the problems? It could also be an issue with the version of the JVM, in both cases I think updating/reinstalling the JVM should fix things.
