Mysql problem upgrading to leopard

hi all.. unsure if this is best posted here or in mysql

have just upgraded to leopard, edited the etc/apache2/http.conf file to enable php5 (works fine)

except that a previously funciton mysql connection is giving me
Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 61 in /Library/WebServer/Documents/path/to/dbconnection.php on line 14
Could not connect: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 61

i've downloaded the mysql 5 packages and installed them.. to no avail - any ideas?
