need mac mail help

I recently purchased a Netgear WGR614 router for my Mac Titanium Laptop G4. After installation with a network cord I am able to access the internet. But I am unable to retrive my email from comcast into my mac mail. When I take the network cord off the router and connect directly to my Mac my mail is restored. Can someone help me with this problem? Are there preferences I need to reset?

Are you using dhcp, or static IP? with DHCP, you shouldn't have to alter any settings, I think if you manly set your IP then you have to do some extra steps.

I believe I'm using DHCP, a colleague told me to turn off my firewall. Could that be the problem?

There shouldnt be, if it's using DHCP then it should just plug straight in and go. Might need to disable the network cord and re-enable it to get it to pick up right, I have to do that every now and then to get a proper setting from my router.

Thanks for your help, that was all there is to it. unplugging everything and the automatic setting kicked back in all is well again.
