Parallels and Boot Camp
A question from a newbie: as long as Parallels provides boot camp support I can move my boot camp partitions to Parallels(i hope i got it right
) Does Boot Camp support under Parallels means that I no more need two separate copies of Windows - one for Parallels and one for Boot Camp (one copy will do for both)Will Boot Camp be dropped now? |

Boot Camp won't be dropped. This is great for both Parallels AND Boot Camp!If this works the way I'm thinking it will, then I would think everyone who wants Windows on their Mac would install it using Boot Camp and ALSO buy Parallels.Want to play a game? Restart in Boot Camp! Just want to check something in IE? Open up Parallels! Unfortunately Parallels doesn't support 3d graphics, but the team is working on it now!
To work like this before meant wasting hard drive space for 2 copies of Windows and either spending money on two copies or trying to get around the liscencing issues that come from trying to run 1 copy of Windows on "2" machines (virtual machine is still taken to as a "machine" ) . I think this takes care of both problems you are talking about. |

I hope that the following articles will help you:
(URL address blocked: See forum rules) - an article about Boot Camp support under Parallels (URL address blocked: See forum rules) - another article about Boot Camp+Parallels Boot Camp will not be dropped because Parallels doesn't support 3d graphics. Gamers use Boot Camp because they cannot play under parallels. And gaming industry is a very important issue. actually Parallels are doing some job around graphics now, but still it is a VM and it will not provide native speed in complicated programs, such as games, which require all system resources. Personally, I've never liked the idea of partitioning a hard drive.
x_X Now, if they add support for external usb or firewire hard drives, then they'll have me happy. I mean, it'll be bad enough I'll be using windows on my Mac, I'd rather not have it even on the hard drive. I really hope Vista flops. |

Well partioning is a fact of life if you want to dual boot.
My problem is that parallels has dodgy mouse support. Rather than patch parallels they elected to release a patch for windows that irons things out leaving linux users up the duff.

Well, actually as far as I know the new beta for parallels includes usb support. I think that external usb hard drives will work properly. I would say that it's rather convenient to have two Oses on your mac... Why not run windows if it is possible at almost native speed |

Absolutely right. In the end of december Parallels released third beta for parallels desktop for mac. It includes USB 2.0 support - it lets you use external usb hard drive and a lot of other features. Here is a full list (found it on parallels homepage ) :Quote:

33specter, here is some information about Boot Camp support you started with. I also took it from the official site of parallels:
"# NEW! Better Boot Camp support - Using your Boot Camp partition in Parallels Desktop is now easier than ever. Beta3’s Boot Camp support includes: * Full support for FAT32 and NTFS partitions * Easy offline configuration. Simply tell Parallels Desktop that you want to create a virtual machine from a Boot Camp Partition and click start. No complicated set up required! * No need to re-activate Windows each time you switch between Boot Camp and Parallels. Activate Windows only once inside Parallels and work in both environments * IMPORTANT! It is not possible to suspend a Virtual Machine that is connected to Boot Camp as it could result in an unstable system. * VERY IMPORTANT! Beta1 (build 3036) users must boot natively into Boot Camp and uninstall Parallels Tools for Boot Camp prior to running it in Beta3 (build 3106)." This will definitely answer all your questions about Boot Camp support ![]() |
