Petty question

I know for a lot of people this is going to sound like a silly question,
but..it's been eating me up all day that I just can't figure it out. My name is Samantha and I just turned 18, my going away to college present was this mac laptop they bought me for my course in Sheridan.

As glad as I was to get it, I've definitely been having some issues downloading trivial programs like msn messenger or music sharing programs. Every time I finish a download and double click, instead of getting an installation wizard I get a message saying I have no specific default application to open it.

What does that mean? Can anybody help? :\

It means just that, you don't have a program to open that application.

Just curious is this your first mac? If this is, you need to know now that alot of pc stuff won't work on a mac. You have to make sure whatever programs you decide to put on it are able to run on it.

BTW...Here is the link to get msn messenger for mac MSN Messenger

Ugh, I adore you. Thank you very much,
and yes it is. Does that mean I wont be able to download things like bear share and other pc friendly programs...? Or like the link you gave me; they will just need to be specified for a mac?

You need the mac friendly programs as mentioned. Alternative to bearshare = limewire, if you need any other alternatives, you can ask here and we can give you them.

Since you're using a Mac, you might as well take advantage of its GOOD software.

Limewire is fine, but I tend towards Acquisition or aMule.

Instead of MSN I recommend Adium.

Instead of Word, I recommend... Okay, that's one area in which Windows still has us licked.
