Remote Desktop connection from Windows to OSX
In my website development, I find it'd be very helpful to have a Safari client to test page layout in. The graphics designer behind me has a nice G5 with OSX, but we don't really have anyone who's intimately familliar with Mac administration. I think he's got Apple Remote Desktop on there, so it sounds like it should be able to do something useful.
The desired goal here is behavior similar to a Windows RDP connection, making a completely separate session relatively transparent to the user physically logged into the machine. My general experience with VNC has been that it connects to the currently logged in session and doesn't create a new one. Anyone help direct my stumblings a bit?

Hey icrf,
There are a few solutions however I think that VNC is probably gonna be the easiest – you should be able to get it working with either platform and it's free. The problem, as you mentioned is that this will probably not start a new session. Not a good thing if your designer is using the computer. But if he's not you not turn around and use it for a sec .There is Apples remote desktop, which doesn't interfere with the client machine. However it's not cheap and I'm not sure how it works with Windows. Mark.

Timbuktu might do what you want, again it's not free but it will work with Windows and OSX.

yeah, I think I might just play my luck then. If I can get it the same in IE5.5, IE6 (which is better than 90% of our hits), Opera, and Firefox in Windows, my chances are good it's managable in Safari. I'll occaisionally have him bring it up to see, but it's hard to fix things without a poke and refresh session.
Is VNC supported in ARD, or is that only some new proprietary protocol? |

Thats probably a good idea, you can assume that Firefox and Safari will display pages the same, or very close. I've used both on the Mac and never noticed any difference.
Yes, according to the Tech specs ARD does include support for VNC: "Observe and control screens on any remote Mac or VNC enabled computer, including Windows and Linux systems." Take care icrf, Mark. |
